Interview with David Fenster, Director of Wood

Shane:   How did you come up with the idea for Wood?

David:   I can’t say exactly where the idea came from but Wood was greatly influenced by a Studs Terkel book called Working and Fred Wiseman’s films.

Shane:   Was this a school project?

David:   No

Shane:   How long did the film take?  (From conception to final edit)

David:   1 year

Shane:   What was the most difficult part of the shoot for you?

David:   The shoot was great, the editing was difficult.

Shane:   The film has been playing various festivals.  Any favorite experiences so far?

David:   It was my second time at The Los Angeles Film Festival and it has been great both times.

Shane:   What is next for you?

David:   Another short in the same vein call The Livelong Day about a model railroad club.  It should be done in a few weeks.

Shane:   What films or filmmakers inspire you?

David:   Lately I’ve been watching a lot of Michael Haneke films and they are great.  I have also been watching Deadwood and The Wire on DVD which has been an amazing experience.  They have inspired me to do something episodic.

Shane:   What made you decide to become a filmmaker?

David:   I think I originally saw it as an intersection of many narrative and art forms I was interested in.

Thanks David we look forward to talking to you again soon.
